BUILT YOUR ROBOT
HACKATHON HISTORY
In the educational vision of the Fundación Flors project, IT and technological innovation have played a prominent role; since the 1980s, an optional subject in computer science has been proposed and the school was one of the first in Spain to have a website.
Robotics is one of the fundamental pillars of the educational project of Fundación Flors from Elementary to Primary, ESO and Vocational Training. The evolution of Fundación Flors students in the field of robotics is regularly put to the test thanks to their participation in extracurricular activities such as The Code Week and competitions organised by the centre and other important organisations in the sector. Our school has obtained excellent results in the Robotet, Desafío Robot, World Robot Olympiad and CoderZ League in a Box editions. In the latter competition, based on virtual robotics, a team from the first year of ESO has managed to qualify for the world phase to be held at the end of the year in the USA.
As a result of the progression in the field of robotics, Fundación Flors, in collaboration with Vila-real City Council, is organising the VilaBot competition, aimed at students aged between 8 and 18 who design, build and programme an autonomous robot created with LEGO pieces or any other material to overcome the two challenges proposed: the orange grove or the football match.
In the last edition of 2022, a total of 40 teams from 11 schools in the Valencian Community competed in these two technological challenges, with a magnificent response from the city’s schools, as 5 schools and 20 teams came from Vila-real.
From the seed of VilaBot, Fundación Flors launches the Erasmus+ Flors-Aveiro Hackathon “Build Your Robot”, an international event co-financed with European funds and organised in collaboration with Agrupamento de Escolas José Estêvão de Aveiro (Portugal).
This Erasmus+ project, co-financed by the European Union and organised jointly with Vila-real City Council, aims to promote scientific and technological vocations among young people through educational robotics. Students are confronted with unfamiliar problems and have to acquire new knowledge, work in teams and be creative in order to implement the best solution. All of these are important skills and abilities for the world of today and the future. With robotics the student becomes an active being in class and learns while having fun.
